Bodin Demonomanie BNF 1587 - Bodin, Jean, 1530-1596
This is Bodin's major work on sorcery and the witchcraft persecutions, first issued in 1580, ten editions were published by 1604. In it he elaborates the influential concept of "pact witchcraft" based on a deal with the Devil. The book relates histories of sorcerers, but does not mention Faust and his pact. It gave a report of a 1552 public exorcism in Paris, and of the case of Magdalena de la Cruz of Cordova, an abbess who had confessed to sexual relations with the Devil over three decades....

The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories - Mark Twain
LibriVox recording of The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories, by Mark Twain. Read by Ted Delorme. Here's a Mark Twain story that's very unlike those he became famous for, but when I read it back in Catholic high school, it left a deep impression. It concerns the deeply religious residents of a small village in Austria during the late sixteenth century, and what happened to several of them when a strange man began to visit their insulated homeland...

Powder Poison: Royal Plot
“It has been written to prove that the real procurer of the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury was King James himself; that the instrument he employed for the purpose was Théodore Mayerne (Court physician); that the Countess of Somerset was also engaged at the same time in an ineffectualattempt to poison Overbury; that the King, hearing of this some two years after, determined to make her and her agents his own scapegoats; that accordingly he employed Coke and Bacon to get up a case against them, ...

________________________People come together and form a society for the purpose of cooperating. When they do, they lower their defenses and form trust relationships to facilitate interaction and productivity. But this makes them vulnerable to predators that violate the trust in order to gain a disproportionate share of what the society produces. So there must be some deterrent against predatory behaviors or people will not lower their defenses enough to facilitate congregation and cooperation...
